Roots Revival: A Volunteer-Centered Youth Leadership Experience in Rural and Urban Greece (Ages 16–24)

Now accepting applications, Roots Revival is a volunteer-centered youth leadership experience designed for young people seeking meaningful engagement, cultural immersion, and personal growth.

This two-week experience immerses participants in the realities of both modern urban Greece and traditional rural island life, combining hands-on volunteerism, guided leadership development, and deep cultural exploration. Set against the historic backdrop of Athens and the authentic, community-driven environment of Naxos, Roots Revival invites participants to live, learn, and serve alongside local communities.

Taking place from Tuesday, June 30 to Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the program is intentionally designed to help young people grow into grounded, capable leaders—not through titles or theory, but through service, humility, and lived experience.

The Experience

Participants will engage in:

  • Meaningful volunteer projects that support environmental stewardship and community well-being

  • Hands-on learning experiences rooted in agriculture, sustainability, and local traditions

  • Guided cultural exploration connecting ancient Hellenic values to modern civic life

  • Leadership challenges that build adaptability, collaboration, and personal responsibility

Through this immersive approach, participants develop a deeper understanding of global responsibility, civic engagement, and the enduring values that have shaped Western civilization.

Program Highlights

Grassroots Living & Immersion
Experience daily life in both urban Athens and rural Naxos, gaining firsthand insight into how communities live, work, and sustain themselves.

Volunteer-Centered Service
Contribute meaningfully through environmental and social initiatives such as tree planting, beach cleanups, food support programs, and community-based projects.

Cultural & Historical Exploration
Discover Greece’s history, art, and traditions through curated site visits, workshops, and shared local experiences.

Leadership Development
Build resilience, humility, personal excellence, and civic responsibility while practicing intercultural dialogue and active citizenship.

Connection & Community
Form lasting friendships with like-minded youth from Canada and Greece, united by shared purpose and experience.

Who Can Apply?

Youth aged 16 to 24 from across Canada may apply. Each group is intentionally limited to 10 participants to foster strong bonds, trust, and meaningful peer collaboration. This small-group format allows for deeper connection, shared responsibility, and individualized guidance throughout the experience. Selection prioritizes demonstrated community involvement, a genuine service mindset, openness to learning, and alignment with core Hellenic values, including civic responsibility, resilience, and personal excellence.

Application Deadline

The first application intake deadline is March 30. Additional intakes may be announced after this date, subject to availability.

There is no cost to apply. Selected applicants will be invited to confirm their participation and submit a deposit at the end of March.

Spaces are limited. Early application is encouraged.

Costs & Fundraising

Thanks to generous sponsor support, core program activities are covered. Participants are responsible for hotel accommodations, meals, ground and sea transportation in Greece (estimated $3,000), plus airfare and personal expenses. Fundraising support is available through our peer-to-peer platform (Fundrazr), where you can rally your community to support your journey.

Q: How many participants are in each group?

A: Groups are intentionally limited to 10 participants to foster strong peer bonds, collaboration, and personalized guidance.

Q: Is this more of a volunteer program or a cultural trip?

A: It is a volunteer-centered leadership experience that intentionally blends meaningful service, cultural immersion, and guided leadership development.

Q: Who supervises participants during the program?

A: Participants are supervised at all times by experienced program leaders and local partners, with structured daily schedules and clear safety protocols.

Q: Are participants free to explore on their own?

A: Free time is built into the program, but expectations, boundaries, and check-in procedures are clearly communicated to ensure safety.

Q: What level of physical activity is involved?

A: Activities include walking, light farm work, beach cleanups, and day trips. A reasonable level of fitness and willingness to participate actively is expected.

Q: What happens if a participant decides to withdraw after being accepted?

A: Withdrawal and refund policies are outlined in our Terms and Conditions and depend on timing and incurred costs.

Q: Will participants receive a detailed itinerary before departure?

A: Yes. A full itinerary, packing list, and pre-departure orientation will be provided in advance.

Q: Can I participate if I’m not Greek?

A: Absolutely! Our program is inclusive and welcomes youth of all backgrounds who share an interest in Hellenism and community engagement.

Q: Do participants need to speak Greek?

A: Greek language skills are not required. All program activities are conducted in English. We do however, encourage all participants to pick up on key words and common expressions in Greek.

Q: Will participants receive volunteer hours or a certificate?

A: Yes. Participants receive documented volunteer hours and a program completion certificate upon request.

Q: What if I can’t raise enough funds for air travel and personal expenses?

A: We encourage all participants to utilize our fundraising platform (Fundrazr) and involve their community. However, you are responsible for ensuring these funds are secured before the trip.

Q: Will I know the exact program cost before committing?

A: Yes. participants will be able to make an informed decision about their participation prior to making any financial commitments.
